Unboxing the Sony Vaio UX50

unboxing

At last it arrived! FedEx delivered my Vaio UX50 this afternoon, overnight from Dynamism (thanks Jason, great service!). If you are all wondering why I’m only posting the uboxing pics just now, well, it took time for me to setup my camera gear, the shoot, and the manual edit of 185 frames of the clearest unboxing pics ever :D .

Check it out after the jump. I hope you enjoy them!

Check back for Part II where I’ll be comparing the UX50 side-by-side with other devices.

James Kendrick over at jkOnTheRun has also posted a 44-minute UX50 unboxing video. Check it out.

Very slick. It is always fun to see how companies package up thier premium products.

The slideshow is very slick how do you do it?

Love the pics. Can’t wait to hear about performance. I’m vacillating between waitng until price comes down, getting UX180(because USA versiion), or getting UX50 ( I have Verizon and can’t use the EDGE card).

how about something useful now, like a review? OK already, we know that it is in the box. So what, we want to know if it should go back in the box and be returned or if it is a “keeper”. My guess, since you haven’t posted anything since you took it out of the box is that you are not sure if it should be kept.

I bought one in Japan a week and a half ago, and posted an unboxing video and some technical detail there:

    http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/archive/2006/06/10/81423.aspx

Performance is about 20% faster than my Dell 1.8 GHz Centrino. And it can play back high def video filling the 1024×600 screen at 60fps. An incredible unit. Read the post for more details. Also tells about getting around a sound card issue you may have if you install English Windows XP on the Japanese unit.

Nice job Reggie….nobody could ever accuse you of not being thorough with 180 unboxing pics. I love how you even provide a picture of the nondescript bottom of the outer packaging of the UX50…now that’s attention to detail :o )

Just out of curiosity Reggie how long did the whole process of unboxing take you? (including stopping to pose for the pics)

Well done again on a professional presentation.

    Chi Guy & Rob,

I used a Canon 20D connected to the PC and using a bundled PC/Mac software that controls the 20D to take pictures every 5 seconds.

The process of taking the shots only took about 30 minutes. I loaded the pics to a Mac software and edited (cropped and adjusted) them. I batch resized them, and then loaded them to SlideShowPro. ;)

    Thanks!

    Thanks Reggie, well done.
Your pics answered a whole lot of questions I had, and created a few more.
Like, what is that drawer on the bottom of the docking station? Don’t have a clue.
And, will the power adaptor plug directly into the battery, or does one have to lug the docking station around to charge it?
And finally, if you purchased the high capacity battery, does it fit in the docking station?
    I’ve pre-ordered a 180P, can’t wait.
    Thanks again, great site.

    Welcome KCMO!

The drawer underneathe is a currenlty a Japanese feature only. It’s called FeliCa. They have a card (size like a credit card) or a device on their keychain, that if you wave it on top of that sliding ‘drawer’, you get instant access to some password protected sites. It’s more of a password keeper. It’s cool since you store information to those devices sort of wirelessly since there are no contact points.

You can connect the power adapter either to the cradle, or directly to the UX. Each has a separate power port.

The extended battery should fit the cradle. The semi-transparent stand at the back of the cradle does not touch the battery area so it should be ok.

Let us know how you like the UX180P when you get it!

Ummm… I own a UX50. Isn’t this the Sony UX180P? The UX50 is a Palm platform and came out several years ago. THIS is an entirely different animal.
