Vaio UX with Windows XP Tablet Edition
I just wanted to do a quick post to inform everyone that I managed to install Windows XP Tablet Edition on to My Vaio UX50. Booting off my new DVD drive, I used my wife’s Windows the office’s XP Tablet Edition OEM install CDs that came with her HP TC1100 tablet from it’s MSDN subscription library.
Installation took a while since the OEM install CDs that I had were a bit old and only came with the standard XP Tablet Edition OS. I still had to install SP2 after the initial install which took a while. As for the drivers, Dynamism was kind enough to leave a copy of all the english drivers and required software in a separate “Sony Support” folder in drive C (note that the Vaio
UX180P drivers won’t work on the UX50). I just clicked ’setup’ on each one and XP started detecting the UX hardware one by one. There were one or two occasions that I has to install the driver again, and in some instances I had to go the device manager and force a driver install, but all in all everything installed fine!
I also tried installing MS Office Professional 2007 beta and One Note 2007 beta. After the initial pen calibration, I did some quick pen tests with Journal and One Note and the usual pen functionality and ‘convert to text’ features are all working great.
Let me know if you want me to test some specific items. A full pic after the jump.
By the way, stay tuned for the Vista test install.
UPDATE: For legality’s sake, I had to change this post and use the office’s MSDN copy of XP Tablet Edition. Note that I will not activate the OS, will uninstall it, and will only do tests for a maximum of 30 days. Thanks to jk for pointing this out.

I’ll be very curious to hear more updates as you play with this as I’m considering the same option when my UX180 arrives. I’m surprised Sony did not include the tablet pc OS on the UX. Hopefully the conversion isn’t too painful.
It seems like Sony didn’t license the Tablet Edition from MS that’s why Sony never came out with a tablet pc of their own.
You should have a better experience since all the UX180P drivers are available online.
Btw, here’s a tip. Backup an image of your drive using Acronis True Image Home or Norton Ghost just in case you have problems.
I was so enjoying the articel and it ended. No, no no, i want more, did you try Age of Empires on it.
Did you try Speech to Texh, or the Visual Studio env?
Were you able to replace the memory with something bigger, is that hard to do, what about the Hard drive….
please I want more… I am coming back for more!!!
Reggie,
Btw, how’s the keyboard? Is it usable (especially as a stand-alone)?
Battery tests? Ive read in some other sites that it performs at about 2 hours for casual web surfing…
VaioWannabe,
They keyboard is quite usable. It’s quite flat but I guess Sony had to do this to give clearance to the screen when you slide it up and down. I find the enter key a bit small though.
You should read my entry about StickyKeys which help a lot:

Hello,
for my new UX90S (with an English WinXP Pro) I’d like to have the Tablet PC XP on this new machine. I have the installation CDs from a broken Tablet PC. However, can anybody tell me whether an upgrade is possible, or must I do a complete new install?
Thanks,
oherzog
Hello David,
I am kinda new to these forums.
I just bought a brand new Sony UX280p with Windows XP Pro installed on it from the Sony factory. I think if I had Windows XP Tablet PC installed on it
I could use the UX280p like my Palm Pilot by being able to write on the screen and having that text stored in various applications.
Now my question: I can get a licensed version of 2005 Windows XP Tablet.
Can I install that right on top of the existing system ?
Thanks in advance,

After quite a bit of searching,I bought the OEM Tablet PC from BestBuy Business website. Just do a search for “k46-00208″ which is the microsoft SKU for the os.
I recently installed xp tablet 2005 on my ux280p and there is a problen with the screen. The farther that i get away from the middle of the screen I get with my stylus the more that the pointer is off. The pointer will not go to the corners when my stylus is tapping there. I have tried to calibrate the pen and it does not help. Does anybody have a solutions to this problem?
Any updates on

I seem to be having the same issue.
Hi Reggie,
I recently attempted the exact same reimage you successfully completed I would greatly appreciate it if you could contact me directly so I could ask you some questions.
Greatly appreciate your response.

Anyone have the ux with vista? I just got the 380. Vista seems to have limited tablet apps for the ux indicating that the UX in not a tablet.
So I am wondering if XP for tablet is a better way to go.
And how do you operate software when the screen is zoomed. Either default in the zoom setup still makes apps difficult. I wind up chasing the program around the screen to execute anything.
I am getting real frustrated with the box, so any encouragement would be great.
Thanks
Hey guys,
I just tried installing tablet edition on a 280p. the set up ran normally, but upon reboot, no tablet functionality… what did i do wrong?
I’m using an MSDN copy labeled “Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005″ (legal).
i just can’t figure out how to get tablet stuff working.
NOTE that i just did an upgrade, not a full / fresh install. Do you have to do a full/fresh install to get the tablet features to work?
Thanks!
(this forum is great!)

It is a good chance you will need to do a fresh install
To fix stylus calibration problem (the farther you get away from the middle of the screen the more the pointer is off) under XP, you need to install the touch panel driver included in “Windows XP driver application Pack” and use calibration utility that comes with the driver.
