Install your own Windows the DIY style

This post was done thanks to maxik who pointed me to KCAP.EXE.
It seems to be an old SONY utility found in old recovery CD, you use it to decompress Sony’s *.PAC file.
It should be used this way kcap.exe filename.pac destinationfolder

The First Step is to install windows using whatever way you want. I’m using an external IDE DVD-ROM player hooked with an IDE to USB adaptater.

DRIVERS
Then you have to grab your recovery dvd and install the drivers one by one. The drivers can be found in “\VAIO\DRIVERS

Setup means that it has a Setup executable.
Inf means that you have to manually add/update the driver in device manager.

  • AUDIO
  • Setup, Realtek High Definition Audio Device Driver

  • BLUETOOTH
  • Setup, Toshiba Bluetooth USB Controller Driver

  • CAMERA
  • Inf, Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC3 Driver

  • WIRELESSLAN1
  • Setup, LAN-Express BCM IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN

  • WIRELESSLAN2
  • Setup, Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG-BG Network Connection Driver

notes: you can put all your inf drivers in one folder and then delete all undetected hardware and when windows will ask for the drivers for the first device, point it to the all inf folder. Windows will then check this folder for the next devices it finds.

Kool tutorial. Now all you need is an FTP to share those utilities. =) US recovery DVD is a bit different and .PAC files do not include all the goodies; for some reason Sony US wraps their software installs with model checker so that they will only install on the intended computer. I used to be able to bypass it, but it seems like the latest UX180P Updates posted online are not working with my hack… so I gotta come up with something else… if anyone knows how to, please post. Thanks.

you have a very nice wall desk top setup. could you tell
me how i can do it with my ux50? many thks.

  3. 3 3 Vincent alias NBC

I already posted the wallapper link in previous article.
    And I’m using Yahoo Widget ( http://widgets.yahoo.com/ )

  4. 4 4 vaiofreak

Check out the JP Support site for UX: Sony posted a BIOS update and Vaio camera driver update.

thanks again. i have manage to setup all drivers.
But the intel 82801g(ICH7 Family) PCI Express Root
Port - 27D2 could not detect any of my drivers. I
understand it is a sound driver. But i have already
    intstalled audio setup. any clue?

  6. 6 6 Vincent alias NBC

why do you need it to detect your driver? if it’s named , it got its drivers.

  7. 7 7 simon cai

the system does not detect any suitable driver for the PCI port.

i have the same problem …with the audio driver …also the newest driver from sony are not functional …

Get the file KB835221.exe from your recovery cd and execute to update the winxp. It fix the audio problem.

    Hi all,

To those of you having problems installing the audio drivers - try the following website and the Microsoft KB fixes on there.

    http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/archive/2006/06/11/81540.aspx

After installing TabletPC English version, I was able to install all drivers except the Audio. It kept failing with the message “Microsoft Bus driver must be installed before installing Realtek Audio drivers” (or similar message) and I was unable to get audio. Also, in my Device Manager, a PCI device was permanently question marked and I could not install drivers for it even from the AUDIO folder.

I downloaded and installed the fix KB835221.exe from the website above, and as soon as I had done that, it automatically recognised the audio device, and I was able to install no problem. Audio working perfectly!!
I hope it works for you if you’re having that problem.

I had one more problem - after installing Vaio Power Management and then changing my power profile, I was getting the following error - “Windows has closed this app - Data Execution Prevention - Run a DLL as an App”.
After this happened, I was unable to shuit down the PC properly. It would get to “Windows is shutting down….” message and then sit there forever. I would have to manually power off with the power button.

After starting up again, I went into the followign setting: “Control Panel -> System -> Advanced.” In the “performance” section, click “Settings”. In the dialogue which comes up, click “Data Execution Prevention”
Then select the second bullet - “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select” and in the box below, “Run a DLL as an APP” should appear. Check to select it. Then click OK etc as many times to get out of all the dialogs and control panels. You might get prompted to restart - I cant remember. Its probably a good idea to restart anyway.

You might see the “no power down” problem again when shuitting down BTW.

If the “no power down” problem does not go away, then UNINSTALL and then REINSTALL “Vaio Power Management”

That temporarily fixed the power-down problem for me, but I noticed it stiull happened occasionally.

Run Windows Update as many times to pull down all the latest updates and hotfixes. Since doing that, the power-down problem has not reoccurred for me. (But its only been a few hours so thats not definitive that its really gone…..)

Anyway, hope all that helps somebody :-)

One more “TIP” (pardon the pun) for anyone installing Tablet PC OS.

I noticed that the floating TIP would not appear anywhere on the UX-50.

You can fix this by searching for and downloading a program called “floattip”.
After downloading (and expanding if necessary) to get the floattip.exe file, place this exe in “C:\Documents and Settings\\Start Menu\Programs\Startup” and reboot.

After rebooting you might get some message from Windows about “floattip.exe”. Just say you want Windows to start it, and not ask you again. You should now find the floating TIP working as on a normal Tablet PC!

  12. 12 12 Vincent alias NBC

The Realtek R1.39 from realtek site has
    MSHDQFE\Win2K_XP\us\kb888111xpsp2.exe
in its zip, so i think it install it automaticaly, that’s why i did’nt encounter this problem.

  13. 13 13 simon cai

strange problem: i have everything work except that once i installed camera softwares the unit refuse to switch off as well as it does not go into standby or hiberation mode. And i can only get the front cam working, and i have installed the cam utils but it seems refusing to run. So the back cam has no software to drive it.

  14. 14 14 sonietje

Very nice article. I intend to use this to install an English XP on my UX50 as soon as it arrives. Are you using the original drivers from the recovery DVD that comes with the UX50?

  15. 15 15 simon cai

i have perfect setup for English xp prof. setup if anyone
    interested.

  16. 16 16 Vincent alias NBC

It seems that the camera has a problem with powersaving.
so you need to disabled powersaving for it.
In device manager, go to USB controlers
and check the 5th one, it should be the camera connected to it.
and uncheck “Allow computer to turn off this device to save power.”

  17. 17 17 simon cai

it seems that the cam utils refuse to run even though i have set it up without any error. i can only run the front cam. you need the cam utils running at the same time to be able to select between cams.

  18. 18 18 KCMO

UX180P - Anyone have a fresh out-of-box hard drive usage for the OS and “extra” stuff? How about after your re-install? Based on the screenshots I’ve seen of the start menu, seems like there will be a lot of disk space savings potential.

  19. 19 19 simon cai

As you can see the image(desktop) above, how can you get the little nice battery gage display on wall paper. thks

  20. 20 20 Vincent alias NBC

    I’m using Yahoo Widget

  21. 21 21 simon cai

    thank you….

  22. 22 22 Alex

Strange I can’t make the camera software (the capture button too) to work.
Thezoom butons don’t run the zoom too.

    Any suggestions?

  23. 23 23 LoN

I can`t find the driver for the Linksys USB 2.0 Network Adapter… Anyone knows where to get it to remove it from the Others Devices in Device Manager. Thanks…

  24. 24 24 sonietje

I just finished installing the English winxp pro on my new UX50. I followed the instructions of the aricle and everything works perfectly except from:
    - I don’t find the right keyboard layout
    - I can’t get the second camera to work.
If somebody could give me some help to solve those 2 issues I would really appreciate.

  25. 25 25 Alexey

My UX can not neither poweroff nor hibernate. it stucks on Windows is shutting down… :(
i tried tip with DEP and installed all windows updates - no luck.

when UX is on docking station - it hibernates/power off OK. when i take it off from dock - it refuses power off/hibernate.

looks like some driver of device which is on docking station locks terminating procedure..

is there any way to find problematic driver/device by some microsoft tool?
i looked into event viewer - no any information there.

  26. 26 26 Alexey

i just found one pattern to make this problem temporary disappear. If, after resume from hibernate i unplug/plug (or plug/unplug) USB mouse then computer will able to go to hibernate later. Looks like something wrong with device enumerator and re-plug helps by generating some system message..

any thought about how to solve it permamently without re-plugging devices?

  27. 27 27 Cam Utility

The following are necessary for the 2nd camera(VAIO Camera Utility) working.
    1. .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
    2. SetGamma

  28. 28 28 Qythyx

I had the same problem with shutdown/hibernate/standby/etc. I couldn’t fix it so I’m in the middle of a reinstall of the OS. I’ve got all the required drivers and important apps (camer, fingerprint, etc) installed and so far reboot is still working. (YEAH!)

I’m being pretty careful to reboot pretty often to try to see at which point it stops working (if it stops working this time). I’ll let you know if I find anything definitive.

On a different subject…When you installed the Camera Utility (to allow you to choose the front or back camer) and the Special Key utility, did they get placed in the Start Menu? For me they are not there.

  29. 29 29 Kevinbl

I’ve had the same hibernate problem and after a search I found an update which solved the problem on my Jap UX50 loaded with Win XP Pro. The update is called MIOOTH-01107700-US. I cant recall the website but will try and look it up and post the link here.

If anyone has any hints on getting the Bluetooth, 2nd camera or CAPS Lock key working, I’d be grateful.

  30. 30 30 Fred

Thanks to all the people post here, this is very helpful doc. I format my UX90 and install Chinese WinXP Tablet. Everything is fine except the camera at the back. I try to turn off the save power of USB and install .Net Framework 1.1 with SetGama, but it won’t work. Every time I click the VCUSet.exe a popup window appear say ‘unknown error, VAIO camera Utility will close’.

Hope someone has the solution. Thanks.

  31. 31 31 Fred

    Finally both cams work.
Go to ‘DRIVERS\SONYIMGF’ right click ‘SONYIMGF.INF’ file select install.
Reboot your machine. Try to take a picture, the cam selection window will popup.

  32. 32 32 outie

Any way to find PenPlus english version for my UX90ps? I have both UX180 and UX90 recovery DVDs.

  33. 33 33 stanleyj

For this section you should either make a CD, have it on a USB Storage or do it on the go.
To decompress the application that you need, you should type, for exemple
    KCAP.EXE Z:\APR\SP-011717-02.PAC C:\INSTALL
    then go to either
    C:\INSTALL\SP-011717-02\BAT\inst.bat
    or
c:\install\SP-011717-02\BIN\setup.exe to install VAIO Touch Launcher.

Here is the list of what can be found in the APR folder.
(note1 : this is based on my japanese recovery DVD.)
(note2 : in bold is what I recommand installing.)

i am a noob to this…can someone tell me how to do this in windows??

  34. 34 34 Floodguy

    Hi,
where is the WinDVD package located? I can’t find it either in \Apr nor in the \Apr2 folder. Also checked the Sony.pac and Sony2.pac. Nothing!

Hey guys, this is such a great site!! I bought a UX90S from Dynamism, and ended up having to install XP Pro from scratch. Dynamism sent me the drivers, but would not part with any other info (protecting their Intellectual Property).. and thanks to you guys its all up and working!

…with only one small problem! I cannot change the Touch Launcher configuration :( it works ok with the default config, but even editing the ApplicationData.dat file (which looks like it ought to be a config file) manually does not change the default application settings!

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Dear collegues
    Great forum
But I am not really familliar with all msdos codes.
    I have UX90PS japanese version
I am clean install with WIN XP SP2
was able to install all drivers applications. Those steps are easy because there setup files provided
But from the Application (step2) it becomes more complicated.
I open cmd ms dos and try to copy exactly what you have written but gives that the commands and re not recognized.
    When I tipe KCAP.EXE Z:\APR\SP-011717-02.PAC C:\INSTALL
it says ‘KCAP.EXE’ ins not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file
    Then when I tipe C:\INSTALL\SP-011717-02\BAT\inst.bat
it says The system cannot find the path specified
    or
    c:\install\SP-011717-02\BIN\setup.exe
says the same that it can’t find the path.
Do you gus understand what is it happening
Do you guys have any easier methods setting up all application without msdos?
I am really stuck at this stage. I have even try to get some collegues to help but they have no understanding of what is happening.
    Would appreciate your support.

    Hi…
this is now 4 the German People:

    Grüßt Euch..
Wenn auch Ihr ein VGN-UX50 oder höher habt (Japan Model) dann funzt das auch alles mit dem Deutschen WinXP. Teile der Programme sind dann zwar in Englisch aber das ist ja zu verschmerzen. Das einzigste was wirklich ärgerlich war ist der Bug mit dem Sound. Aber der Mircosoft Fix “KB835221.exe” hat das bei mir behoben. Dann viel Spaß an dem kleinen “Microschlepptop” :)

To bypass the model checking on the latest drivers follow the normal procedure with one small exception.

Open the model.tct file as normal and edit the model number but dn’t bother to press save yet.
Start the install then save the model.txt . Continue with the install. enjoy

So I dont know if I ever got a Restore DVD ith my UX50. How does one extract the exe files downloaded from Sony?

  53. 53 53 Benz145

Trenium, not all UX’s do, but if your UX didn’t come with a DVD recovery CD, you probably have a built in recovery partition. In order to access it, restart the computer, and while its booting, spam the F10 key (Fn R) this will boot you into the recovery partition. Also, what Sony has done, is included software to help you burn recovery DVDs from the partition, then you can remove the partition and reclaim a few extra gigs of HDD space. And easy way to check whether or not your UX has this built in partition is to look at the size of your HDD. My UX180p’s HDD is advertised at 30GB. However it only shows up as 22GB when I look at it on the My Computer window. This is because that extra space is taken up by the hidden recovery partition.

Can anyone help me? i Recently bought a Sony vaio vgn-c51hb/w in japan. I cant understand japanese so i reformat it then i install windows xp instead of windows vista since i dont have a windows vista. Im having a problem looking at all the driver compatible to windows xp. Could anyone help in my problem please. is there any site which has a complete driver of my laptop. Here is my email jeffglider_blue_diamond@yahoo.com. Please anyone please help me.

  55. 55 55 R. Neal

Benz145 - How were you able to delete the recovery partition? I can’t seem to remove it. I installed the Vista upgrade, and only had 5gb left on my C: partition. So I reinstalled XP using the recovery DVD, but was unable to remove the recovery partition.

  56. 56 56 Benz145

I’m pretty sure that the included software that allows you to burn the recovery disks will also walk you through removing the recovery partition once the disks are burnt. If you want to remove the partition without burning the disks (which I would NOT recommend) there are tons of third part apps to augment/remove partitions. Do a search on the forums, you’ll come up with quite a few.

    Help please..
My recovery disc was broken and I don’t have backup of it.. (stupid me!)
My problem now is the rear camera.. I can’t get it working..
Someone telling me that I need the ff:

The following are necessary for the 2nd camera(VAIO Camera Utility) working.
    1. .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
    2. SetGamma

I already have .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 (which is readily available in microsoft’s web)
Unfortunately I don’t have SetGamma. Can somebody help me where to find this file?
    Thanks

I am a new member and found this website by searching. Excellent.
I have a UX50 and original recovery disc in japanese. I have installed english version and would like any help to make all buttons and functions work.
The bottom button on left, magnifier buttons on right and rear camera. Would it be possible? I am near Leeds in UK and wonder anyone can sort this out for which I can negotiate charges. Many thanks.

to install the drivers in the C:\Windows folder there will be a text file “model.txt” change it to the driver model your using.

for japanese VAIO drivers in US you need to go to the ftp site on sonystyle.com and download the image files from the european models.
