Sony is holding their “VAIO Outlet Quarterly Sales Event” in which they sell various refurbished products at reduced prices. While browsing through the laptop section of the sale, one would notice the UX280p (1.2GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 40GB HDD) for the very attractive price of $1,129. The brand new product used to sell for $1,800. Now it would seem as though you can no longer purchase the UX280p brand new from Sony’s site. See the product page at the link below:

1.2GHz Intel Core Solo CPU
1GB RAM
40GB HDD
4.5″ LCD screen with Xbrite (1024 x 600 resolution)
2 Cameras, front (0.3MP) and back (1.3MP)

I just bought this from Sony, they go in and out of stock but have been consistently available. I paid $1439 with tax, shipping, and a 2 year accidental damage warranty. I will post my thoughts when I get it next week.

I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS ON CELLULAR? IT IS GSM? OR CDMA? IN THE CASE IT IS GSM, WHICH BAND DOES IT USE? 850 MHZ? 900MHZ?, PLEASE LET ME KNOW

I rcvd my 280p yesterday and I love it! Looks and acts brand new. I am completely pleased with the quality of this refurb. No complaints.

It goes in and out of stock. I would try calling the sales number, they work on commission and will keep an eye out for one.

The UX is not a cell phone. It does have a cingular card built in for internet, but does not support the calling network. You could use skype when connected to WiFi, but Cingular’s EDGE data service is probably too slow. I have the EDGE service, but have not yet tried Skype on it. I will try this weekend if I have time and start a new thread with the results.

The 180p has a 1.2GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 30GB HDD. Also, 2 cameras (front and back), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a built in Cingular EDGE modem for WWAN connectivity. The UX180p is the oldest US model, and Sony no longer sells them. The newer units (280p, 380N, 390N) have better specs. I picked up one of these. Ordered it last Sunday and received it on Tuesday. I couldn’t believe how fast it got to me. So far, so good. It plays back my divx and xvids perfectly. E-comics are a breeze to read on it. I use it to browse at hotspots, and while I’m on the can at home. Good stuff.

I just got my UX390N but some of the goodies are back ordered. I’m waiting on the blutooth keyboard and mouse. I also ordered some 8Gig memory Sticks. Right now, I’m looking at the various different ports to hook it up to my digital TV.
