I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.co.uk

[...] Snooping around one of Sony’s sites, I found mention of a VGN-UX383CN, a UX model that I don’t believe has been seen before. CN is generally the tag that denotes a Canada localized product (on Sony products at least). SonyStyle Canada has had the UX380CN for sale on their site for months now. So that begs the question: what is the UX383CN? My best guess is that it is the Canadian equivalent of the UX490. You might ask “Why wouldn’t they just call it the UX490CN?” well my friends, Sony might actually be sparing us confusion in the model number department this time around. There is a US UX version with the model number VGN-UX490NC. The UX490NC is the UX490N+Extended Battery+Bluetooth GPS Adapter bundle as sold by SonyStyle here in the US. A model titled “UX490CN” would get extremely confusing for customers. If the UX383 does turn out to be a Canadian version of the UX490, you can expect the same specs: 1.2Ghz Core 2 Solo CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 48GB SSD. The only difference would most likely be the inclusion of CF slot in place of an EDGE modem. More details when they appear. [...]

[...] With the recent release of the UX490, there have been many questions about the performance of the new unit over the other models. I’m doing my best to gather as much data as I can, but there just aren’t that many people who have come forward to purchasing a 490 yet. It would be great of owners of the new UX490 could stop by the benchmark thread and post up some scores for us. Eventually I’ll be doing a front page piece on the performance of various models, but I can’t do that until I have enough data! [...]

You can get 64gb SSD version in Japan - maybe it will arrive soon. All the other specs are the same - except the Japanese version also has a compactflash type II slot. http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/UX3/spec_ownermade_flash.html

Why can't they make one with a GPS chip inside. I would think there is enough space, if cell phone makers can fit one...

[...] In what appears to be an attempt to make the UX380 and UX390 look like still viable purchases in the face of the UX490N/C bundle, SonyStyle.com is offering the two older units with a few extras. While prices of the 380 ($1,849) and 390 ($2,349) have not changed, their contents have. Customers who purchase the new UX380NKIT1 or UX390NKIT1 will be happy to find an extra stylus, VAIO LCD screen protector, and a VAIO leather protection case (see Pocketables review of the case here). In all you will save around $83. The new bundle seems to have had some success as the UX390NKIT1 is already reported as being sold out. Still I think it is a better purchase decision to go with the UX490N/C bundle which will only run you $150 more than the UX390, but offers up the latest hardware as well as an extended battery and bluetooth GPS unit. The cost minded consumer may want to check out the Ultimate UX Price Post in the forums to find the best prices on all models of the UX series. [...]
