Just about everything is perfect on my UX50 with English XP....all except the fact that I cannot get lots of the keys on the keyboard to function as I want them to. All the letter keys work, so do the number keys and enter/tab/shift etc. However the ones like \ @ : [ etc. dont seem to come out right. When I click on the @ button for example a [ comes out.
I think this is because of the Japanese keyboard conflicting with the UK Keyboard layout...but is there a way to solve this so that the correct symbols are produced when I press a button?
Thanks

If you go to control pannel >> Date, Time, Lanuage, Regional Options >> Regional and Language Options >> Lanuages >>Details.
You will see Keyboard. Make sure this is set to what ever keyboard you have. Take note that US, US have different keyboard layouts, so you might want to check both of them out.
let me know how it works.

Thanks for that Zakeen....I was thinking about that and I have tried a couple of different combos but I am not quite sure which keyboard config to pick. Does anyone know the exact setting? Thanks

Arghhhh...I still cannot get the keyboard to work properly. I have tried almost every combo of keyboard/languages in the "Date, Time, Lanuage, Regional Options" but all of those seem to produce the same results.
There must be a file on the recovery CD which stores the UX50's keyboard layout. I have been searching for it for ages but to no avail. Can someone please, please help me solve this problem???
p.s. just to clarify...the problem is that Windows does not recognize the unique keyboard layout on the UX50 and so treats it as a standard 102-key keyboard. This means that when I press certain keys (e.g. the @ key or [ key) the wrong symbol is produced
Thanks

I haven't tried it but maybe you can try the following:
1. Navigate to Start->Control Panel->Keyboard
2. On the Hardware tab, click Properties (note that the current driver is probably "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard")
3. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver...
4. The Hardware Update Wizard launches. When it asks if Windows can connect to Windows Update to search for software, select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next
6. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and click Next
7. Uncheck "Show compatible hardware"
8. Select "Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key)" from the manufacturer "(Standard keyboards)" and click Next
9. Click Yes to continue with the installation when the warning about installing incompatible device drivers appears
10. Click Yes to continue with the installation when the warning about replacing PS/2 mouse port drivers appears
11. Click Finish and reboot

Unfortunately that didnt work Reggie but thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The keyboard on the UX50 isnt a standard "Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key)" I dont think. There must be a file somewhere on the recovery CD which contains the Keyboard layout info!
I localised the keyboard layout to a file called KBDCLASS in system32...but simply replacing the KBDCLASS file from the UX50 with the one from the recovery CD did not work.
There must be someone here who has managed to get the UX50 keyboard recognized properly??
Please help....
EDIT: Could it also be something to do with the SonyPI driver???
I have a UX90 and my keyboard is set to japanese 106/109 and is an english QWERTY
and my keyboard layourt to US and buttons works as it is supposed to.
But the UX50 is a japanese QWERTY so i don't know if it would be the same.
I think you should stick with the japanese keyboard layourt .

Thanks for the reply NBC. I have tried using that keyboard layout but it didnt affect the keyboard output in any way. Has anyone managed to get the keyboard working properly on the UX50 after a complete reinstallation??

Finally I found the cure!!!!!!!!!! All it required was an extra step on top of Reggie's guide above. Here is the full guide:
Stage 1
1. Navigate to Start->Control Panel->Keyboard
Stage 2
1. Click "Regional and language..." in C. Panel
2. In the languages tab check the "Install East Asian languages" then click "Details"
3. Click "Add"
4. Input Language = "English (US or UK)", Keyboard = "Japanese"
5. Close
That is it! Everything works now....thanks very much for the help.
