sony.i* is the backup image of the preinstalled Windows XP Professional.

sony1p_0614502.pac is an archive that can be accessed by the KCAP.EXE utility (http://www.myplc.com/sony/sony_apps.htm). It contains drivers and applications similar to the separate Drivers folder, but also contains important installs such as the VAIO Power Management.

I have an idea...

What if one were to make an ISO image of the recovery discs, then modify it with MagicISO/UltraISO in order to replace the EXE files with another EXE file that does nothing, so as to prevent loading a lot of the bloatware?

I was able to access the recovery partition and delete the EXE of the Microsoft Office 2003 Trial and the Norton Internet Security, but when I tried the restore, it said that the disk was full - probably the only error message it could come up for trying to launch an EXE that's not there.

However, if you can create your own "dummy" EXE that will do basically nothing, it may just keep on going as if it was installed.
