UX180p, Treo 650, and PDANet

Has anyone made this combonation work via bluetooth? I can connect via the USB cable with this combonation, but have not been able to get it to work via bluettoth. My thoughts are that the limitation may be in the Sony's Toshiba BT stack. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, the limitation is on the Treo. You need to download a hack for the Treo to enable the bluetooth DUN profile.

Outie,
I use the Treo 650 Bluetooth DUN supplied by sprint and it works via bluetooth on my Acer Table PC. Is there still an need for this hack in my case?

Thanks for your help.

That's odd. The link I posted says the Treo650 for Sprint has this function disabled but you say it works for your other PC. I was able to dial-up via bluetooth to my Sharp 903SH.

When you tried to pair the device, did you get any error? Could you pair the 2 devices? Did you get any error connecting?

My sprint Treo has the DUN enabled and I have used it with my ACER laptop. It was very easy to make work on that unit. It worked on my first attemp.

Moving to the sony UX180P

I turned on the the DUN on the in the Treo 650 and then open to the Bluetooth Settings utility on the UX180p. This appears to be a Toshiba Utility for the Toshiba BT stack.

I create new connection. I have tried both express and advanced setups. It sees my phone.

I go through pairing steps setting the 4 digit code on each side.

The result is that it sets up the phone as a generic 33.6 modem.

I set the phone number field to #777.

When I try to dial out, it briefly link to the phone via bluetooth , the BT icon in the tool tray turns green. Then after few seconds it reports an error that it fail the connection.

I have played around with lots of setting and have spent probably 20 hours trying and retrying.

I have tried it with my sprinpcs logon ( same as used on their website), as well as, leaving those fields blank. I always get the same result.

If others have made this work, then I must be missing some small step.

I have not called sprint at this point. not sure if they can provide any help. My past experience withtheir tech support were not so good.

I really hope that it is some dumb thing I am doing, If I can get the sony to work like I have done with my ACER I will be very happy.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have had the same problems with my Treo 650 and the UX180P. I cannot get bluetooth to work with PDANet or DUN. I've used the correct bluetooth DUN hack that is available for the 650 with no success. I can get the phone and UX paired correctly but when it comes down to establishing the DUN connection it won't connect. I have tried all the recommended combinations of modem strings, phone numbers etc. I use Cingular and I have used the correct Username and Password combinations as well for WAP. I've settled on using PDNet via USB at this time. It sure is a waste of a USB port though.

On another note, there has been a lot of discussion on keyboards. For $30 I purchased the rubber flexible keyboard from CompUSA for $30. It is USB connected and rolls up to make it very portable. Still not as good as a regular keyboardpu, but a whole lot better than the UX keyboard. Link:

I use the UX via Bluetooth-DUN occasionally. The speeds are OK but not the 100MBs ethernet that I'm used to LOL; I didn't install any software (i.e. I did not put on PDAnet, etc.) but had to hack the phone...there's plenty of websites to help you do this.

Having the UX with a smartphone is amazing, who would have thought of it 10 years ago!

I have not hacked my phone. It does however, have a bluetooth DUN capability enabled and I use it with another laptop. I am assuming that capabilty came from sprint. My phone is about 6 months old. My first tre0 650 was dropped hard and was damaged. I received a replacement from sprint using the replacement service that I pay $3 a month for. I bring this up because maybe the phone I have was hacked by someone else. Like I said the DUN was enable when I received the phone. If the Treos never comes from sprint with an enable DUN capability, then my phone may have been tampered with in some previous life. I am now wondering if I need to rehack or apply some other patch to the my phone. I really want to get this working. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Steve510,
Would you be willing to tell us how you got the treo and the sony 180p to work? Several of us have been trying without success.

I just followed the instructions at http://shadowmite.com/HowToDUN.html and it worked. What I have different from you guys is that my phone is a Sprint phone that was hacked to work with Verizon services.

Hello Guys,

It appears that the Treo650 DUN problems occur with laptops that are running the Toshiba bluetooth drivers. I found several hits on the web where the treo 650 DUN fails with many different laptop models which run toshiba BT drivers. I also have this problem with my Toshiba Qosmio. If I change the bluetooth drivers from toshiba's to Microsofts (delivered with SP2) then the DUN connection works. Problem is that the microsoft drivers are unstable and the connection will lock up the connection often during downloads.

I read here that one guys was able to get his treo650 working, but I suspect that his firmware is one of the older ones, such as 1.08. I've found some other discussions where it was stated that the Treo use to work ok with the old firmware, but after updating it no longer works with the Toshiba BT drivers. I also read that an update to the very latest 1.20 firmware (Cingular's latest) could solve the issue. Unfortunately sprint has not release a 1.20 equivalent (latest is 1.13).

My next test is to install the widcomm 5.0 drivers. I use them on my thinkpad and my treo DUN works perfectly. I've read that on a couple other sony models (TR and SZ series) some people have managed to install the widcomm driver's with a little bit of manual file copying involved. The widcomm 5.0 drivers are superior according to the testimonies I've read.

I don't have my UX50 yet. My wife just bought one for me in Japan and won't get back until thanksgiving. I was very dissappointed when I found my treo DUN wouldn't work with the UX180P I tested at a Sony outlet. Anyway, I will figure out a fix for this. I must have bluetooth DUN working! I'm expecting that the widcomm driver's will solve the issue .

Ok, I got the widcomm 5 drivers running in place of the toshiba drivers. Treo is able to connect and I get 124kbs down and 101kbs up. Not too bad for $10 per month unlimited.

BTW, I used the following link among others to get the Widcomm drivers setup:

Cool. So how'd you get it for $10. a month? Who is your provider?

I have theSprint Vision plan. Now they have an unlimited EVDO plan for $15 per month, but they do not allow using the phone as a modem unless you pay $40 instead of $15. Of course someone over at treocentral.com has already found a hack to allow tethering with the $15 EVDO plan.

are the widcomm drivers that much better? I ran the toshiba stack and it works fine most of the time but seems to take 2 redials to connect. I had an anycom bluetooth card before and it would always connect 1st time everytime. I have a ppc-6700 phone. EVDO is fast!

I wouldn't mess with the widcomm drivers if your bluetooth connection is already working. Unfortunately the widcomm driver install is not clean, requiring some hacking to get it installed. The real issue is with the Treo bluetooth, which is poorly implemented.

Actually I installed the widcomm drivers 5.0.1.1200 and it works much better! DUN connects much faster!

I tried installing 5.0.1.2100 but it wouldn't work. FYI if anyone tries it.

Bober99,

Did you need to modify the inf file? I tried 5.0.1.1200 drivers, but it didn't find the radio.

Having the exact same problem.. any advice would be much appreciated.
I purchased the UXP280P just for the DUN.. and I get the exact same problems as nswenson explained. Heres what I did so far:

1) Toshiba Bluetooth Stack -- no luck connecting DUN to treo 650.
2) Upgraded Toshiba Bluetooth Stack from Toshiba web site -- no luck (and now i cant even reinstall the original toshiba bluetooth stack.. from sony site.. it just stops mid install)
3) Installed widcomm 5.0.1.1200 (patched) -- Does not detect the bluetooth radio
4) Installed widcomm 5.0.1.801 - Does not detect the bluetooth radio

So right now im completely without bluetooth as I cannot reinstall the original.. and the bluetooth upgrade from Toshiba has a 30 day evaluation.. but just like the old bluetooth, wont do DUN.

I have the widcomm 1200 drivers working. Just needed to add a couple lines to the inf file. I can send you the modified inf. Just send an email to nswenson (at) gmail (dot) com.
