I have an HP873n with an Intel P4 2.53GHz and 512 ram I can upgrade the p/s from 200w to 450w and upgrade the ram to 1 gig. It has an nVidia GeForce 420 with 64 mg video ramand I can upgrade it to an nVidia 7600GT. Upgrades (less a new hard drive would be about $210.
My question for you gamers is this. My hard drive died and I am thinking of getting a game machine. What are the pros and cons of upgrading my HP or just bite the bullet for a low end gaming machine?

To tell you the truth, I would go for a new Dell XPS, yes I know many people will say that Dells suck, but they are pretty reliable, powerful, and you could get support for them pretty much anywhere.

I like Dell too, mostly for their complete care. Anything happens to the laptop, they'll fix or replace with. And with the couple of times I've gone through it they allowed me to swap the easily accessible parts myself and they always use overnight service both ways, on their bill.

Dell is a top contender on my list as well. Are you an experienced gamer? I don't think you need to go all out for a new gaming rig, just get a decent desktop, stick in a nice video card, and later you can easily upgrade the RAM or CPU if you'd like. I'd recommend a machine with a Core 2 Duo if you are buying a new desktop.

Hi,
I would go with a new rig .. don't bother upgrading those few items.. really depends what you are looking for ?
People here seem to be recommending dell for service etc, do you really need that ?
Do these Dell still come with oem crap MB's etc
As benz said I would go with an Intel processor any of the core 2 duo's starting with the E4400 and now all the way up to E6850, I would suggest going with a E6600 which has 4mb cache and at 2.4ghz, what is awesome about this processor, you can easily overclock it on the stock cooling intel provides, though I do not know if the XPS systems people here speak of come with a MB capable of OC'ing or decent enough ram etc ...
Personally I would build my own tower :)
If looking for a new rig, how much money are you willing to spend and what kinda of specs are you looking at ?

As much as I love Dell and the XPS line cost tends to be an issue. Last week I bought my GF a new gaming rig from .www.cyberpowerpc.com. Cost was easily 1/2 that of a similar XPS, and they use top brand components. Just my .02
