What's the best handwriting recognition program for XP Pro? I know quite a few exist for the Tablet Edition, but Sony must've installed XP with a touch screen for a reason other than tapping icons and doodling.

Any good apps out there for note-taking while using the UX in portrait mode (other than the preinstalled PenPlus)?
What about anything that converts handwriting to typed text?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm using OneNote 2007 B2 at time (and before ON2003). Works great and ink is supported.

I can't access ink. I don't see an icon with the ink blot. Is there something I need to do first. I went into my settings for handwriting recognition, but it's still not showing.

I use EVERNOTE Plus and it is SOMUCH BETTER than One Note & it has the Handwriting Recognition built into it. It is a Killer APP.

OK. I'm noticing different programs, but I must be doing something wrong. I can't access ink. I have the UX180 and I didn't use the trial version of the Office, because I already have Office 2003. Is it the XP Pro or Ofice 2003 that gives you access to ink?

Does the handwriting recognition work inside other programs or do you have to use Evernote? In other words, will it work with my word, e-mail, excell, etc.

Try RitePen which is from the same guys who wrote EverNote (which I also use).

The recognition is very good and you can write anywhere on the screen. It also pops up a list of variations so you can tap on the correct one in case it didn't recognize correctly.

The really nice thing is that you just start writing on the screen and you can write an entire sentence if you want. When you stop writing, it "realizes" that and spits out the text it thinks you wrote. So long as you don't pause for too long between words, you can write quite a bit before the engine begins its work.

This thing just works - no training required.

It does sometimes get in the way of some apps. I use Chaos Software's Time and Chaos for appointment scheduling and the menus don't work if RitePen is enabled.

Disabling RitePen in these situations is easy since it has a tray icon that you just tap on to toggle its enable/disable state.

I used this extensively on my Sony U750P as it came bundled with the computer and since the "U" didn't have a keyboard, it got a lot of hard use.

After I got the UX, I found that I missed the ability to write onscreen for certain things so I bought it.

Thanks Nak, now I can concentrate on scaling down the software so that I can speed up my UX180. I'm hoping to use it as my main handheld. I'll still have to carry a pda for my job software, but that's okay.

It seems plausable that the touch screen was used as a cheaper alternative to a traditional tablet screen due to pricing.

Hugo has posted an interesting vid on touch writing - now this is EO vs Samsung, but showing how the weight sensor can have a dramatic ability on writing and disruption - I've posted him asking his thoughts on the Sony UMPC.

I viewed the video and he was talking about the difference in the touch screen in terms of pressure required to input into the device. If you're using the onscreen to tap items, you want less pressure, but if you're handwriting, you want more pressure. His analysis was based on using a large screen and your palm wresting on the screen which can cause disruption of your handwriting on a lower pressure weight touch screen. The UX screen is so small that when I’m using a stylus for handwriting, I don’t normally wrest my palm on the screen. But using ritePen, I pulled up MSWord and wrest my palm on the screen while writing. My handwriting was still recognizable and nothing distorted due to wresting my palm on the device. It maybe the wonderful software that Nak told us about, but there is no distortion.

I don't know if you guys know, but you can get RitePen (and/or EverNote) for free right now (the full "plus" version, not the trial version) if you go to their website http://www.evernote.com/pub/training/ and supply a sample of your handwriting.

Why do you use both?

as mentioned in this thread

http://www.micropctalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1286&postcount=3

ive already gotten my UX - yipeee!!!

anyway, imo, handwriting recognition is still flaky at best...

so what do i do?

install the PC-versions of BOTH MessagEase, and Fitaly...!! and i can enjoy the same entry speed (at least 40wpm) in my PDAs, on my UX...!!

:D

I've sent off my sample a while back and so far no response... is there something else I need to do to get the free sotware? (ritePen)

bdhu2001,

I use RitePen for "everything" other than EverNote.

EverNote's handwriting recognition only works in EverNote.

So for quick text entry into dialog boxes, etc., RitePen works great.

damn!!!

im very much impressed with ritePen - how can handwriting recognition become this good!?!

and lucky for me that i still havent paid for either MessagEase, and Fitaly - i own the PDA versions, and was almost about to purchase the Windows' version, until i came upon EverNote's wonder!!

so, how much is it? US$29.95 - let me wait until i get my free copy (as noted in the previous post); if not, i guess it is a must for me

:D

were you replying to me?

if that were the case, then i cannot help you - since im in now way affiliated with EverNote.

also, it has been noted in their website that they'd only be offering the "gift" for those samples that they do get to use for their research. basically, NOT everyone would get their own copy free IF they JUST sent in their samples.

in your case, it is probably that they didnt choose to use it; or that since it is over the weekend, maybe theyre on some break or something.

Perhaps you can send in a few more samples? get your family to write new ones too....never hurts to try again!

marblekit, Marques:

I too cannot help much as I'm not affiliated with Evernote either. I don't know what their policy is exactly on the gift vs. the samples, but I did get a response from them within about a day or two. It comes via email to the email address you used to mail the sample in with (they seem to disregard any addresses in the body of the message dispite their request that you state where you want their reply sent to *shrug*). Could your email routing routine possibly have filtered it as SPAM/Junk mail? That usually the first place I check when I don't get a response from someone I'm expecting.

I sent my sample in on 8/3/06, but just got my response today. I think that the weekend and more people sending samples, created a slight backlog.

Anyway, I'd like to give a shout-out to LNG for pointing us to this great deal. I was just about to purchase the software when I saw the post.
