Post Shopping Advice Please
Hi All,

I am sort of an over indulged old woman - and dear hubby said "Why don't you get yourself a new computer for Xmas?" I have been looking longingly at the UX line. But, I haven't seen one in real life. Is the screen big enough for 65year old eyes? I sort of have my eye on the 32gig Flash drive one with 1gig of RAM that Dynamism is selling. Figure if I need more disc space - a big fat CF card should do the trick. I know that for about the same HIGH price - I could get an 80gig conventional drive. But, the flash drive just seems "cooler" and I like black.

I figure if I get it - and find that it really isn't working for me - I can always pass it on to my son-in-law. But, I would really like a nice little "travel" computer. Now, if it only had a longer battery life...

Seriously - advice welcome. I have taken more than my share of computers apart to upgrade hardware - but these days I usually leave well enough alone. I don't even usually upgrade the operating system. So, I'd be "stuck" with XP. But, I don't see that Vista will really add any thing to the little computer.

I don't advise such tiny device for a 65yr old woman. The font is tiny and the keyboard is... not very suitable for old women. Even my 23yr old female friend said it's impossible to read anything and get tired of it after 10minutes. I suggest you at least try it in real life first before making an expensive decision.

I recommend the TX series which has a 11" screen and 9+ hrs of battery life if you like small computers. You can always go to your local computer store to check it out.

That isn't the response I wanted - but - I suspect it is the one I need to listen to. The UX is just so chic!

Thanks...

If you're not averse to reading glasses, they will top up your eyesight nicely. I'm 47 with very bad eyes (they've been going down like the Titanic over the last 10 years) but I still love mine to bits. You have a number of font and sizing options to make life much easier and we're not talking about different DPI settings, these are actually useful ones that work with dialog boxes.

I have mine set so fonts never drop below a fixed useful size and are only displaying font styles that work well with the smaller screen. Many websites use crappy fonts and colors that are less than ideal on a small screen. I also have mine skinned and use a bunch of visual tweaks for optimal usability.

I think the UX is a very workable option as long as you keep your expectations realistic. If at all possible, check one out for yourself.

Otuie - just remember that those of us who want this device (myself included) will put up with idiosyncrasies that others wont. For instance when i get mine home there will be an 18 y.o that will be clambering over me to use it coz its cool but the wife wont even go near it as its another useless (and don't forget expensive she'll say!) toy the we have to put up with. What is important that for me and what i want to use it for it will be as god as i can get it. As stated before, for work, i can't have a notebook as it will sit in the car asking someone to steal it. So for me and my application it is perfect. And lets not forget it is the latest and sooooo sexy

Peg - I would say check it out and if you really want it and are prepared to put up with a smaller screen running the same res as your desktop but a quarter of the size, go for it. I would, however, say go and check one out. Lets face it they're not cheap and if you make a mistake i know your son-in-law will love you forever (hell i know i'd have a different opinion of my MIL if she gave me one!) but then again it doesnt do your pocket any good no matter how much you have.

Correct, if Peg just really wanted it (like most of us just bought it without seeing it in person) she wouldn't be asking opinions here. I based my recommendation on Peg's concern, age and particularly the screen size. I am not sure if Peg has perfect eyesight at this age. I also don't know if this will be her main computer or just to browse and check emails like few times a day. I still recommend checking the unit in real life first. If you feel comfortable using it, go for it; it's a great machine. We all like ours.

While the UX has various font setting and zoom functions, it will only display less information on the already limited real estate. The zooms are pretty useless because it just makes the text jagged and ugly.
