Spammers attack and Invasion

Postby bandit2xx » Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:12

Hello...

Seems that now is fashion people registering into forums to be able to post spam. Some user decided by himself that the best use of this forum is to sell drugs (viagra and stuff). I heard people telling umpc are a bit underpowered but don't think viagra will do it!

Honestly I don't know what can be done about it but I'm hoping we as community can clean this trash. Who knows... maybe next step will be the forum to spread virus and steal user data...

Thanks for those who have reported it.

We get these spambots now and then but this is a new strain that tries to bring down the board by posting unlimited posts.

We have the means of taking care of this spammers by just one click -- banning their user ids, IP addresses, and deleting their posts. We need to get notified that of these posts though. We hope you can help us by reporting a spam post by clicking on the Image icon at the upper right of the post. This will immediately send an email to me and I can immediately do something about it.

Thanks and sorry about the inconvenience.

The problem of course is that new IPs are easy to acquire. Is there any pattern as to where the spammer IPs have orginiated that you can tell ? Maybe blocking entire ranges from suspect regions (if a pattern exists) would be one thing to try.

Also, I know limiting user rights would be a bad thing to do but maybe a new user would have to vetted before his posts appear...similar to blog comments that need to be approved prior to being published...I know more work for the admin/mod but maybe necessary at this point.

Another issue with blocking these IP's is that most attacks tend to come from infected zombie computers of average users. Blocking these IP's is most likely going to cause other problems since these user's IP's are mostly dynamic, meaning legit users can get blocked. Something needs to be done to restrict registration such as a captica i thinks that how you spell it.

There is a way to see someones ISP code (or whatever it is called). I am not sure how to do it, but if anyone here has ever logged into RuneScape, you would know that it tells you where you last logged in. It tells you this "code" so that you can see who logged in last. Mabey you guys can figure out how to obtain and block this.

PS: This will not change unless they change their ISP.

No post on this forum has ever been more ironic than this one. Spammers really need to read up on grammar as well.
