Windows 10 on UX!!!

Postby tomn » Tue Feb 10, 2015 10:26

Windows 10 technical preview is out, and build 9860 SUPPORTS 1024x600 resolution and able to run Metro apps at that resolution. Anyone tried it out yet?

Here is how to get Windows 10 technical preview:

Right now i have no plans to try it on the UX but I've read about people installing Windows 10 technical preview on HTC Shift and with good results except some apps.

I had some time last night so I put Win10 build 9926 on my UX37GN. After doing updates & driver installs, here's what I have so far. Basic functionality is OK out of the box for video, wifi-ethernet, etc. At this point I can't get any UX special hard keys to function- zoom, scroll, TL, or camera (I can assign keys in the button utility but they don't work). After fiddling I can launch the VCCU app & get the front camera (0.3 Megapixel facing the user) to work, but it won't switch to the rear one. With the Alps driver the stickpointer isn't crazy sensitive but there are no settings to adjust/turn off the tap-to-click function. Some of the Vaio apps work- like power mangement.

The default Gunze driver works as a mouse, so windows doesn't recognize a touchpanel- it won't let you calibrate the touchscreen. Fortunately I bought the Touch-Base win7 driver years back & was able to install that in win7 compatibilty mode- works fine. MSDuo slot works (with W7 driver) but the CF slot doesn't (I think that was a default MS driver in Vista) - no big loss.

I never did anything with windows 8, so I have no experience with the "metro" style interface. I'll see if I like it at all. Overall Win 10 is fairly slow. Yes I have a crappy OE toshiba hdd, but this still is slower than win 7. It's blue screened/restarted a couple times on boot, & is over a minute until it has a useable desktop. There's some lag in general use, & with 4-5 tabs open in IE there's been some instances of 30+ sec response lag.

I just found a seller on ebay that has 32GB Samsung zif ssd for under $17, so I ordered couple & with see how Win 10 works then.

wow, thanks for that update. It is good to know UX owners can still use windows 10 on their collectible UXes.

I see no losses no being able to use the CF slow. It was so slow and CPU intensive when it did work, the slot was really a waste of space.

Ceehoppy1st, do you have tcollectablehe Anh CPU upgrade on the win10 Ux?

Also I definitely agree that using the old Toshiba hard drives can be very very slow. You will find a dramatic improvement using the Samsung SSD! I have been using the 64gb Samsung SLC SSD now for many years on this UX and it is still going strong with no write amplification issues what so ever.

Read my signature bigs- my UX280 has the U7700 & ssd (64GB samsung right now). I put win 10 on the stock UX37- U1500 & 40GB hard drive. I left the hdd in because the UX37 is just for fiddling around, & I didn't want to spend $$ (but $17?, can't turn that down).

You're "preaching to the choir" about ssd's. I had my first UX280 for less than a week before I ordered a Mtron ssd - that was over 5 years ago.

nice what happened to the mtron SSD? I heard good things about the performance of those drives, but the power consumption was rather high.

Sorry about not reading your sig, must have missed it since I am literally typing this message on my Ux built in thumb board and using the tiny 4.5" screen. It also has been a while since this board has shown much activity, so I guess i forgot what mods you did to your UX.

Windows 10 seems to use far less RAM than Windows 7. If we can get it working well, the value of our UX will raise because there is nothing like this in the market. Imagine bringing out the UX with a shinning Windows 10 installation, it will be as modern as anything out there!

Windows 8/8.1 is terrible on the UX and I never attempted installing it due to the fact that the modern/metro apps doesn't work on anything less than 1024x768. Microsoft finally rectified this and the modern/metro apps will work very well on 1024x600 resolutions.

Where can I get the touch-base driver? Are they still selling it?

@ bigs, I sold that particular UX with the Mtron some time ago- I didn't need that many UX's around & the Samsung ssd are almost as fast for random R/W (just not as fast on sequential).

@ Tomn, you can check with darkerx & see if the original group buy deal is still in effect (see post #1 here). Otherwise you can contact Touch Base Ltd - you can request a "trial" version driver for free (has "nag-ads" every 100 clicks) or see if you can get the discounted price directly from them.

I know the MS store will open just fine on UX, I haven't tried any apps yet (I'm not sure I want a MS "google" account- (sigh) I am really tired of creating & managing user names & passwords). The lag time in general use on the UX with a hdd is "Vista" bad. Right now I'm reinstalling Win10 onto one of my sammy 32GB ssd.

Win10 is better on the ssd, but still doesn't work as well as win7. Response speeds are tolerable, but fairly often the os loads the U1500 at 90-100%, esp. the Windows malware scanner. I've manually installed any remaining Vista/Win7 drivers as needed, but still no luck with the dedicated UX hardware buttons or rear camera. The on-screen TouchBase keyboard is great, the MS win10 keyboard sucks. All in all I don't think I'll bother too much more with win10.

true true, good to know the Samsung SSD is indeed the best all round SSD for the UX ;). I liked them so much I ended up getting 3 of them just in case of a SSD failure. So far these SLC SSD's are rock solid.

Thanks for the update on windows 10 on the UX. I suspect all modern operating systems are really designed to be used with multicore CPUs. The slow downs you are having may be due to the lack of multi processing threads. Unfortunately the U1500 and any of the core solos or core2solo does not support multi threading. This is where I urge you to try using your Windows 10 installation on your core2 UX and see if it makes a difference.
