New UMPC coming out!!

Postby jonttu » Wed Feb 24, 2016 09:15

GPD Win
Article
So a Chinese gaming handheld manufacturer named GPD is in the process of making a x86 based gaming handheld. Many times I've been skeptical about even seeing new umpc's being demoed at electronic shows. I feel like mobile x86 architectures have finally become powerful enough for decent gaming. I've been waiting for years for another UMPC form factor device, so this is pretty exciting to me. I wonder if there are any other micro pc fetishists around who lurk through here. Just thought I'd post and inform in case anyone was interested.

hmm reminds me of a Libretto u100 in terms of formfactor. I personally would prefer a UMPC continuing the legacy of the UX with the sliding screen to reveal the thumb board, but with gaming controls to the sides.

been doing more reading, it does seem like this GPD win could be the official replacement for those with dying UXes. Wonder though if it can run Ubuntu desktop edition.

The Pyra seems like a feasible upgrade for those using the UX with Linux. But uncertain how many desktop x86 apps would compile to work on an ARM processor?

Also the Pyra does not look like much design has gone into the chasis design.

I am planning to get this as well as the PGS (Portable Gaming Solution) when it comes out. Both have a very good specs for a portable gaming device that can run most PC games at decent settings.

Still have my UX and it runs well, but these two are the official killer for the UX. I might keep the UX for collection purposes, or sell it on ebay again for probably a lot of money for such an antique computer. I had seen this thing sell on ebay for $5000 at least.
