I think it would be too delicate to start mwssing with the lcd housing.

My idea would be to make holes in the existing antenna plastic shroud and mount antenna
sockets onto it.

Hopefully i can find some really small wifi antennas which i can mount either end of
the shroud and fold in towards the middlle so that when folded down theyjust barely meet
in the middle.

I have been thinking about replacing the WiFi card of my UX. I have in mind an Atheros card, since they are great for auditoring and the N models use only 2 antennas, but I have some questions I hope you can help me with:

1. Do the "Wireless Switch Setting Utility" works well with any other card, besides the original 3945?. In case it doesn't, which manufacturer is the most compatible with that program?.
2. I have seen some Half-MiniPCIE cards. They are indeed smaller than the normal Mini-PCIE. Do they fit well on the UX?.
3. Whats the performance of a 4965 with only 2 antennas compared to the original 3945?.

Thanks in advanced.

The UX was designed for Intel cards. 4965 works a little better (& is cheap) but always get the latest drivers (which are same as 3945)from intel for the best performance. Others can chime in about what they think about intel 5100/5300 vs whether atheros or broadcom will work with switching utility.

Half height cards would need an adapter bracket to secure it to UX 50mm mini-pcie slot.

Forget the old crap, get an Intel 6200 or 6230
I have an extra 6200 to sell for cheap, I am using a 6230 in my Z, the 6230 is the same thing as the 6200 it just add BT3.0 to the mix.

If you are going Intel the 6200 or 6300 is the best out, bear in mind if you get a 6300 you will need a third antenna.

My vote for best Intel card is 6200. If you want Atheros I have an Atheros N/BT card also. Both of these cards are half height low power jobs. I have plenty of full height cards also. I should run a sale, I have a pile of great WiFi cards. I no longer use miniPCIe WiFi in the UX, I have the Broadcom CrystalHD in there... My UX is with Anh right now getting 3G and USB WiFi modded in.

Uhm, nice to know... I think I could get a 6200 easily where I live. I should buy then the size adaptor.

So, excuse me for asking again but, do you know if the 6200 works properly with the wireless Switch Utility?. I mean, turning it on and off and switching the 2.4/5 GHz band.

Thanks in advanced.

computercowboy, have u got 6300 avail for sale?

let me know how the new usb wifi mod goes, will be interesting to see how the new usb hub, cryatal hd and usb wifi all compare in terms of total power consumption.

Remember with the traditional minipci wifi, we can software control the power to the wifi, hence saving a good 1/2 watt power. also the wireless switch also can power down both bluetooth and wifi.

I have a 6300 but I wasn't planning on selling it, I want to use it in my Z. I have Anh modding me up a HP Broadcom BT3.0 chip so that it will work with the 8pin USB connector on my Z. The HP Broadcom chip has it's own antenna which will in turn free up the BT antenna to be used as the third antenna for the 6300.

Here is what I've got
Image

The 6200 is a great card for the UX, low power. The 6300 would be great if you have the third antenna. The Ahteros WiFi/BT card would also be great in the UX, you could pull the old BT card out of the UX and reduce power. The Airport Broadcom based card works great, the Airport Atheros card is great but needs an extra Antenna. I think the Unknown card is actually the original WiFi card from the UX. I have even more cards around here somewhere.

Interesting post cowboy. I know of a friend who has a broken laptop with a 6200, maybe I should try it (I need however the size adaptor). The real dilemma here is: to auditor or not to auditor. Having an Atheros card would be so great for Backtrack/Wifiway, and would reduce the need of carriying my Alfa around. Uhm...

By the way, did you just say the Bluetooth card on the UX can be removed? What kind of connection it uses?.

Best regards.
